A tap/contactless and chip card is a debit or credit card that contains an embedded microchip that encrypts cardholder information into a unique code that increases data security when used at a tap/contactless and chip-enabled terminal.
Many merchants across the US are accepting tap/contactless and chip card transactions. Tap/contactless and chip technology is already used in 130 countries around the world so you will have greater acceptance when traveling internationally. If the merchant does not accept tap/contactless or chip cards, you will still be able to use your card with the magnetic stripe. Customers can use their cards for payment over-the-phone or online just as you always have.
First Horizon Bank tap/contactless and chip-enabled consumer debit and credit cards and select business debit and credit cards allow for a contactless payment option. When you see the contactless symbol on your debit or credit card and the terminal, you may wave your card in front of the terminal instead of inserting it into the terminal. Remember, the limit for contactless credit card transactions may be lower than your limit for chip or magnetic stripe transactions. Standard debit card limits apply to the tap/contactless and chip debit cards.
Look for the contactless symbol at checkout. Keep in mind, First Horizon Bank consumer and small business debit and credit cards are contactless.
The limit for contactless credit card transactions may be lower than your limit for chip or magnetic stripe transactions. Standard debit card limits apply to tap/contactless and chip debit cards.
No, First Horizon Bank does not charge any additional fees to use the chip technology.
When traveling internationally, some card readers at unattended terminals (like public transportation kiosks, gas pumps, etc.) will require a special PIN. This is not the PIN you would normally use for U.S. transactions. As such, your card will not be accepted. In these situations, locate an attended terminal to complete your transaction or have an alternate payment method.
Some merchants may have tap or chip terminals, but they may not be activated to accept tap/contactless and chip cards. If you are unable to insert your chip card into a chip terminal, you can always swipe your card to complete the transaction.
In many cases, you’ll sign for credit purchases and either sign or enter your PIN for debit purchases, just like you do today.
Until the technology is available everywhere, chip and tap card acceptance may vary by type of payment card at some merchants. During this transition, you can always swipe your card to complete your purchase.
If you have not already received your new Tap/Contactless Debit card, you will receive it before your existing card(s) expire.
